The three results that get the clicks
Search almost anything local in Charleston, "coffee near me," "plumber West Ashley," "web design charleston," and before the regular blue links, Google shows a map with three businesses under it. That box is the map pack, sometimes called the local pack, and for local searches it captures a large share of the clicks and calls. Getting your business into it is the single highest-value move in local SEO. Here is how it is actually decided, and what you can do about it.
What Google is judging: relevance, distance, prominence
Google has said local ranking comes down to three things. Understanding them tells you exactly where to put your effort.
Relevance
How well your business matches what the person searched. This is mostly about a complete, accurate Google Business Profile: the right primary category, the services you offer, and information that clearly signals what you do. A half-filled profile is a vague match, and vague loses.
Distance
How close you are to the searcher, or to the area implied by their search. You cannot move your business, but you can make it unmistakable which Charleston communities you serve, through your profile's service areas and location-specific content on your site.
Prominence
How well-known and trusted your business is. This is where reviews, citations, and your website's own authority come in, and it is the factor you can influence the most over time.
Start with the Google Business Profile
Nothing moves the map pack more than a complete, well-tended profile. If you do one thing, do this:
- Claim and verify the profile.
- Choose the most accurate primary category, then add relevant secondary ones.
- Fill every field: services, service areas, hours, description, and contact details.
- Add real photos and keep them current.
- Post updates and offers regularly, so the profile looks active.
Our complete Google Business Profile setup guide covers each step in depth. It is the foundation the rest of this sits on.
Reviews are the prominence lever you control
Among prominence signals, reviews are the one you can actively build, and they double as the thing that convinces the next customer to call.
- Ask every happy customer, right after the work is done.
- Send a direct review link so it takes one tap.
- Aim for a steady, natural stream rather than a sudden pile.
- Respond to every review, good and bad, like a professional.
- Never buy reviews. It breaks Google's rules and current FTC rules and can get your profile suspended.
Get your name, address, and phone consistent
Google cross-checks your name, address, and phone across the web. When they disagree, trust erodes and so does your map pack position.
- Write them identically everywhere, down to "Street" versus "St."
- Hunt down and fix old phone numbers and old addresses.
- Clean up duplicate listings that compete with your real one.
- List on the major and locally relevant directories with matching information.
Back it up with your website
The profile and your site are two halves of one job. A strong site reinforces the prominence and relevance the profile is claiming.
- Create location and service pages that name the communities you serve.
- Add LocalBusiness schema so Google can read your details cleanly.
- Keep the site fast and mobile-friendly, since most local searches happen on a phone.
- Publish genuinely local content that ties your business to the Lowcountry.
Why the map pack is worth the work
Ranking here is less about one clever trick and more about proving, consistently, that you are a real, active, trusted Charleston business. That is deliberately hard to fake, which is exactly why it pays off once you earn it. The businesses in those three spots get found first, and being found first is most of the battle.
